The Red Riders saw one of their own place at the tournament and ironically it was the wrestler who had not been on the mat since he was 9 years old. That grappler, Derrick Rovira, finished third in Class AA-A at 215 pounds.
Rovira defeated Jamie Poe of Phillip Barbour in just 27 seconds in the first round. In the quarterfinals, he lost a 5-4 squeaker to Point Pleasant’s Casey Hogg. He fought back in bottom bracket, pinning Oak Glen’s Justin Greathouse in 3:33. He won the consolation finals, 3-2, against C.D. Cox of St. Marys.
“Derrick came out because he wanted to get better at football and wrestling can help you do that. He’s a great linebacker and as it turns out a great wrestler too,” Pernell said. “It was a great surprise to have Derrick come out for the team this year and he did a nice job. My assistant coach (Justin Pernell) really pushed Derrick hard and it all paid off.”
